10 Times Dean Lewis Wrote About Love in its Bare Truth

Dean Lewis is one of our own; a blessed Australian soul. The up-and-coming Sydney talent recently finished touring Australia performing at sold out shows nation wide (and I didn't even go, fml), before heading off to Canada to continue on. When I first listened to his EP 'Same Kind of Different', I didn’t think I could feel so much in just a few songs. Every line he sings has the perfect amount of intensity and intimacy because he speaks nothing but the truth, even when it’s not always pleasant to hear. Here are 10 lines that stuck.

1.    Is it too late to stop the flood? It’s already opened up something I don’t want to stop, does [he] love me? This line needs no explanation because don’t we all know the realisation doesn’t hit us until it’s too late? Now we’re stuck trying to figure it out.

2.  Now you’re looking at me and I’m looking at you like a fool. Ugh. That’s all I can say here, because, again, don’t we all know the feeling? When it hits you hard and you start wondering if they can see it on your face when you’re looking back so hopelessly in love.

3.   It creeps in slowly, stings like poison through my veins… so many questions, so many glances unexplained. Let’s talk less about the looks you don’t get and more about the looks you do. You know the one, where you’re busy doing something and turn around to catch that look on his face. ‘I’m just looking at you, there’s no reason behind it’. But there is and we both know it.

4.     You steal the air that I need and when you’re near me, it gets hard to breathe. BRB, just thinking of all the times I felt this exact way...

5.     Oh what a life when you’re rolling the dice, while I’m gambling all of the time. Is there even a ‘we’ anymore? Because it seems like you’re making all of the decisions, and I’m just waiting for one of those decisions to be me.

6.     But you don’t know what it feels like to fall in love with you, no you don’t know what it’s like when you can’t go back. Is there anything you haven’t said for me, Dean?

7.    And you said ‘hold me, I’m falling apart’. This is when you know how you feel and you know you’re in love, the same way you don’t know how to say it. But what do you do when all you want is to be held and saved by your hero? All you can do is say it, and Dean Lewis understands this in ‘Chemicals’, though all he could do was write about how he took the feeling away from her, so…

8.     I tried to hold on tight to make you mine but I lost each time. I don’t know about you but this is the line that makes me question everything, myself included. Surely if you’re trying to hold on to somebody and fail every time you try, that’s saying something, right?

9.     I think it’s time to let you go, to let your heart find a home, I need to let you go. Maybe I should just move on. Maybe loving you is toxic, and maybe it’s not good for either of us. Maybe you want to move on.. or maybe you have.

10.  I don’t need your love; I just need you now. And this is where you feel yourself settling, because you don’t even care anymore if it’s a mutual feeling or not, you just know that you need him now. And you don’t know this at the time, but you’ll find a love that is deserving of your time, and in that time spent waiting, you’ll see what it’s like to love yourself above all.
